Sea Jellies Illuminated
A state-of-the-art Sea Jelly research and interpretive centre at Sea World on the Gold Coast
Overview
Sea Jellies Illuminated is a new Sea Jelly research centre established through a partnership between SeaWorld on the Gold Coast, Griffith University and Surf Life Saving Queensland. The facility combines a beautiful educational public display and a fully functional, state-of-the-art Sea Jelly research laboratory. The facility opened in early 2019.
Crossley Architects were engaged by Village Roadshow Theme Parks to provide comprehensive architectural, exhibit and interpretive design services. The interior design and interpretive systems feature the work of internationally renowned underwater photographers of Sea Jellies. The Jellipedia and Jelliology interpretive design and development was the product of excellent collaboration between our team, Griffith University’s Associate Professor Kylie Pitt Sea World Curator Marnie Horton. The Sea Jelly life cycle animations were also created in house at Crossley Architects. We acknowledge David Schwartz, Griffith University graphics design student for his contribution of ‘Dave’ the lead blubber character and guide for the exhibit.
Current aspects of Griffith University’s Sea Jelly research include the Trophic ecology of jellyfish, the role of jellyfish in supporting biodiversity in the ocean and global trends in jellyfish populations. We are delighted to have been of assistance to this excellent world leading research.
